Since its inception in 2000, Kerry Rocks has been based in Paddington: first at a stall within Paddington Markets; then six years later, in a small boutique off Oxford Street. In those early days, with her sister Kim managing sales in Australia, Beard lived overseas honing her artisan craft. Already a qualified gemmologist, she travelled through Greece, Israel, Vietnam, and India learning new skills and finessing her trade. It was in India that she met fellow artisan and traveller, Jose Becerra; in 2004 he joined her brand, and in 2008 the duo returned to her homeland.
Together Beard and Becerra have more than 40 years of experience in jewellery design. Their joint aesthetic is drawn from their nomadic lifestyle. Beard’s love of ancient techniques, garnered from her time spent in Europe and Asia, is reflected in her handiwork – ornate carving, strikingly cut stones, and elegant craftsmanship. Her romantic creations are tempered with an unmistakable polish, the result of an influential year spent in New York as a young adult. Becerra leans to Art Nouveau influences fused with his Mexican heritage: his bold, luxe designs are edgy and playful, daring and covetable.
Though their inspiration is diverse, the couple share a singular passion: to create beautiful, wearable, timeless jewellery for the modern Australian woman.
